That will enable them to offer an immersive experience of daytime seminars followed by nighttime entertainment, all with a distinctly cool mid-century vibe. Promoters Otto and Baby Doe von Stroheim are taking over the entire property, including all 170 rooms, from Thursday evening though Sunday March 5. The four-day event offers a trip back in time, celebrating the food, fashions, architecture, entertainment and interior design styles of the late 1940s through the 1960s. The period still has its fans, hundreds of whom are expected to gather at Santa Rosa’s historic Flamingo Resort next week for Resort-O-Rama. Tall tiki glasses with tinkling ice, Fiestaware pottery in tropical colors, fancy ashtrays and starburst wall clocks were all emblematic of the lifestyle and look of the Atomic Age. It’s reflected in an iconic molded plywood and leather Eames chair by Herman Miller and in a turquoise sectional couch from the Sears catalog. ![]() ![]() The post World War II design movement that came to be called mid-century modern, shows up in pink flamingo lawn ornaments and in the masterfully hand-milled furniture of woodworker George Nakashima. Also, this is a very family-friendly resort, so if you are a couple traveling without kids, expect the pool and hot tub to be dominated by children from sunrise to sunset. It can be both tacky and classy, kitschy and cool. While I still think this is a good place to stay, I would encourage other guests to ask for what they need as early as possible, because it definitely won't be offered to you proactively. You can communicate with the front desk via text, but they will not remind you of the housekeeping policy or go out of their way to ensure your comfort, which was especially disappointing for a longer stay. They currently have a policy that provides housekeeping after your third night, but management and hotel staff seem to disagree on whether that is provided automatically or only upon request, and there is a deadline for such a request that isn't publicly advertised. Rooms are quiet and comfortable and well-situated for access to the pool, restaurant, and nearby health club and spa. The resort's location is excellent for access to wherever you may want to go in Wine Country, and the renovations within the last few years provide a "retro" quality while still providing a modern hotel experience. All in all, it was a great place, decent rooms, nice pool (especially during the week when there were a lot less people), and good food- we just wish they hadn't been shady about the rates. The kicker was that the rate that was quoted was not at all what was billed (and we booked directly with them), and then they didn't even follow up with a receipt, we had to reach out and only after a week of phone calls did we get an itemized list of the bill. Not a huge deal, but 2 minutes of description would have saved us 15 minutes of trouble immediately after checking in and not being able to get into our room. At checkin, we barely even got a map of where our room was, and there definitely wasn't a description of the nuances of the room and property (there's two doors, the one is often jammed, if you deadbolt one, you'll have to walk all the way around to the other). What they failed at was information and transparency. ![]() The resort was very family friendly, and did great at accommodating our variety of guests (little ones, active grandparents, grandparents in wheelchairs, and parents wanting to go out on the town).
![]() It’s the extra boring stuff where OMV tends to excel.įor management, OMV delivers a web-based interface. One is a consumer-level OS designed for single-user systems, and the other is based on a multi-user, enterprise-grade, open-source OS.īoth do many similar basic things out of the box, such as hardware support, user management, scheduling jobs, multilanguage support, network support with IPv6, wake on LAN, software RAID, disk quotas, monitoring, and print support. Windows 10 wins here, right? It supports everything-what can beat that? It’s a touch unfair to compare Windows 10 Pro against OpenMediaVault. Windows is likely going to need at least a 64GB drive, while even OMV is going to work more efficiently with more memory to buffer file transfers, though its storage really remains small. We’d question both of these minimum requirements in a real-world setting, though. Microsoft states a DirectX 9.0 video card is required. The minimum drive space is 16GB for 32-bit and 20GB for 64-bit systems. 2GB of memory is the minimum for a 64-bit system, while 1GB is required for 32-bit systems. Windows 10 still supports both 32-bit and 64-bit processors, with a minimum speed of 1GHz. For those interested, it’s based on the Linux distribution Debian, which is one of the best supported and longer running distros out there. The system is designed to run "headless," so there is no requirement for video hardware, and it can run from a USB stick. It does support ARM processors, and it has builds for the popular Raspberry Pi 2 and 3, and ODroid SBPCs.īeyond that, requirements are minimal: 256MB of memory and 2GB of drive space. This is up to version 4.0.14 (codename Arrakis, for Dune fans) as of the end of 2017, and only supports 64-bit hardware- older 32-bit hardware needs to fall back to version 3.036, from mid-2016, which isn’t ideal. We’re going to look at one of the leading open-source NAS distributions, called OpenMediaVault (OMV for short), which is available from here. Today, people expect a NAS to provide remote management, file shares with full permissions, print services, a slew of network protocols, virtual machine support, media transcoding, media streaming to multiple devices, supporting tens of storage devices with multiterabytes of storage, with snapshot and versioning features on top of backups, plus a smorgasbord of flexible plug-in options.īut why choose a potentially limiting NAS solution over a Windows install? Let’s start by taking time to compare and contrast what both options have to offer. When the term NAS was first coined, people were just happy to easily access remotely stored files (and not get nuked by the Russians), nevermind get any specific additional services. ![]() The film is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who also directed “Mississippi Grind.” Set to debut in March 2019, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure following the epic story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a former Air Force pilot turned super-hero. When screwing the 2x4s to the plywood, we use 2.5" exterior screws and we use two screws for each side.Īlong the top edge of the slope and sitting in the notch is going to be the steel coping. We also put them along the top spaced at 8" apart and then lastly we cut some shorter pieces that go under the 2x4s at the top for added support for the deck. To frame the quarter pipes, we screw in one upright 2x4 on each corner of the transition, one laid on its side at the top of the slope, and then one every 8" (upright) until we reach the bottom. There are (34) 2x4s needed for the two wide ramps and another (17) needed for both the shorter ramps. Once we have these lengths, we then cut all the 2x4s down to length for all four quarter pipes. That gives us a 2x4 length of 94.5" for the wider ramps and 46.5" for the shorter ones. The next step is to cut all of the 2x4s that will be used to frame each quarter pipe, so to get the right length we have to subtract the width of each of the 3/4" plywood transitions, which means subtracting 1.5". We'll then bolt one of each together to give us a 12' wide ramp. We're building four quarter pipes: two that are 8' wide and two that are 4' wide. ![]() Once everything is laid out, we then cut the shape out with a jigsaw and use it as a template to mark the other seven pieces and cut them all out, being careful to get them all as close to the same as we can. There is a small notch for the coping where that top-line meets the slope that is 1.25" tall and 1.75" deep. Next, we measure the back side to 2' 11.25" up from the bottom and then square that line across until it meets the curve we just drew. (This part is easier to see and understand if you watch the video from Step One.) ![]() We'll then measure a 6' length of string and tie a pencil to the end and use it to draw the radius on the wood. Once we have it marked, we'll put in a screw and then tie a string to it. ![]() Since 2x4s are 3.5" wide, this will give us a 6' radius slope. To lay them out, we start by putting two sheets side by side on the ground and marking the pivot point which is 6' 3.5" from the bottom and 2" in from the side. These are cut from 3/4" plywood and we can get two transitions from one 4' x'8' sheet. For this ramp, we're building four different quarter pipes and each one has a transition on each side. The first bit of construction is to layout and cut the sloped transitions that make up the sides of the ramp. To help keep it level for a long time we put a 3-4" thick layer of gravel underneath each of the footings.įor the rest of the ramp, we'll put 2" thick concrete pavers every 4 feet along the length of the ramp. We use a line level to ensure all 4 corners are level with each other, as well as square and evenly spaced.īecause the ramp is heavy, the foundation will settle a bit over time. ![]() Because our yard slopes downhill, the ones at the top get buried quite a bit and the ones at the other end are above ground. We start by laying out exactly where it will go in the yard and then use Concrete Footings (12" x 12" x 8") and put one at each corner. In our case, our yard is neither flat nor level so we had to fix that. It's important that the ramp sits on level ground, so in a perfect world, it would sit either on a flat concrete pad or at the least on a wide level space. Whatever the exact size of your ramp, you're going to need a flat piece of ground to put it. The ramp we're building is 3 feet high, 12 feet wide and 24 feet long.

The single “The Ringing Of The Steel” was nominated for the 2008 Golden Guitar Award in the “Heritage Song Of The Year” category. Peter Denahy is a story teller, and although his background has been in country music, his music covers a broad range. ![]() In terms of the typical Australian bloke depicted in this music clip, there seems to be no real elements missing from his character. Although he’s different from the blonde hair/blue eyes/well-tanned stereotype which is more affiliated with Australia than him, the use of clothing items, personality and language is effective in upholding what a typical Australian male is like. In terms of the Gen Y character, the director has played on the general stereotype which a majority of society knows this demographic as. This means that a lot has been left out in terms of the rest of the Gen Y cohort, who act completely different to what is being shown in the clip.In Peter Denahy’s case, it led to a whole new song! After a three week spell of trying to come up with lyrics for songs for his new album, he began rehearsing what he would say about how his song writing was going.Īnd that is how “Sort Of Dunno Nothin” came into being.Īpart from proving that inspiration can come from the most unusual sources, the song has become a hit on YouTube, and has now been picked up by radio stations across Australia, and the video clip is being aired on television as well. Also, playing on what Australians call humour is able to create a sense of exclusiveness, as non-Australians would have quite a surmounted amount of trouble in figuring out where this humour is created. The stereotypes which are portrayed in the video clip are effective in being able to conflict each other, which makes for some quite awkward viewing. These different kinds of Australian icons all help towards being able to identify that the music video is aiming to be a representation of Australia. On the table, at times, there is to be seen: a jar of Vegemite, a tomato sauce bottle, a White Crow sauce bottle, a can of baked beans (Heinz, a former Australian brand), a lamington (Australian icon) cake and an akubra. There are also various imagery and icons which can be seen in the various scenes throughout the music clip. All of these feelings are created by the character in the clip. He is able to do this through uttering monotonous, frequently one-word answers every time a comment or statement is thrown at him, performing such activities like playing video games and texting whilst undergoing a conversation and he seems to have a pretty boring and pointless life (judging by the answers he gives to the questions). (played by Travis Kesek) What we have come to know of Gen Y’s in the past has been that they are: obnoxious, misinformed, oblivious to their surroundings, uninterested, rude and lazy. The other stereotype which can be seen is the typical Generation Y Australian. Also, he makes reference to sport in the song, which conjures up the stereotype that Australians really love to play sport, especially ‘Australian’ ones like cricket and AFL. The lyrics which he is saying also have connotations to Australian stereotypes, especially when using Australian slang like: ‘all hunky dory’ (all good) and ‘ya gonna have a good catchup’. ![]() This is a stereotype which we often see in various degrees of overseas Western media. Also, he has an air about him which suggests that he is very easy going, and very relaxed, mainly from his thick Australian accent. He wears an Akubra, a well-known Australian type of hat. Firstly, you have Peter Denahy, who plays an ‘outback Australian’ role in the clip. His character exudes the personality of a typical Australian bloke. There are quite a number of representations found in the video clip. The film clip (and the song) are targeted at people who have quite an understanding of ‘larrikin’ humour, which pretty much narrows the target audience down to those people who have lived in Australia for a substantial amount of time (5+ years). This music video was shot in 2008, and directed by Ross Wood of 171 Entertainment, an Australian based company. I’m analysing the music video to this song, as well as the lyrics, because I feel it explores various different Australian stereotypes. “Sort of, Dunno, Nothin'” is the title of a song by Peter Denahy, a Victorian based folk singer/songwriter. ![]() ![]() Individual pieces have a chance to be a rewardĪt Renown 74 you are granted permission to purchase Ensemble: Court Inquisitor's Vestments from Chachi the Artiste for.
