With the new Lock Screen option, though, you can set a specific Lock Screen for each of your focus modes. Working? Social media notifications can be pushed back until the end of the working day. In the car? The driving focus mode will silence distractions, and let people know you’re busy. Introduced in iOS 15 (and getting some big upgrades this year), Focus Modes let users switch between different settings that are tied to a particular status. Not only is that great for users that love to mix things up regularly and flick through different layouts, but it’s also a great tool for F ocus Modes. This means that once you unlock that particular Lock Screen, you can set what appears behind it. Now, when setting a new Lock Screen, you’ll have the option to Set as Wallpaper Pair. With iOS 16, though, Apple has worked to tie both the Lock Screen and Home Screens together more closely. It kept prying eyes off of your Home Screen but offered little more than a notification window. This meant that your Lock Screen, certainly since the inclusion of Home Screen widgets, felt like a security measure and nothing more. You could set an image as your wallpaper on both, but that was about the limit of the two working in tandem. Why is my Home Screen tied to my Lock Screen, and how are they affected by Focus Modes?īefore iOS 16, Home Screens and Lock Screens were almost completely separate. The same technique works on many of Apple’s preinstalled backgrounds, so don’t worry about missing out on the feature if you don't have a favorite photo to use. It’s easy to toggle on or off but does add a touch of class by using the iPhone’s intelligence to separate the background from the foreground of an image. Perhaps most impressively, iOS 16 can apply a subtle depth effect to your images, which means your clock can appear just behind subjects in photos. Not only are there new fonts and colors to choose from, but there are now Arabic Indic and Devanagari options, too. You can also customize the way the digital clock at the top of the screen is displayed, which is a first on iOS. At the time of writing, third-party apps aren’t supported, but there are still plenty of uses for Apple’s “stock” widgets that we’ll cover shortly. Widgets, previously added to the iOS Home Screen in recent years, can take up the spot just below the time. From the iCloud Mail settings you can purchase a new domain or enable catch‑all aliases right from iCloud Mail settings. If that sounds a little basic, rest assured there is much more that can be done to tweak your phone’s Lock Screen. And your custom domain can be shared with people outside your Family Sharing group. Hide My Email is integrated directly into QuickType keyboard suggestions, so it should always be available in third‑party apps. The Hide My Email and custom email domain features of iCloud+ are getting a little more useful in iOS 16. Now your calls will only end when you tap the End call button-or the person on the other end hangs up on you. Head over to Settings, then Accessibility > Touch and select Prevent Lock to End Call. If you’ve ever mistakenly ended a phone call by hitting the power button, Apple has a solution in iOS 16. Though sadly, it doesn’t appear to be coming to the iPad just yet. The built-in iOS 16 keyboard now has an option for haptic feedback as you type-without those annoying keyboard clicks-so it’ll feel a little more natural tapping the glass. Or just see it to read it out loud to a friend for whom the usual seamless Apple Wi-Fi sharing isn’t available. With iOS 16 you can finally see the passwords for your saved Wi-Fi networks in plain text! You can then easily copy it to the clipboard to share how you wish, if necessary. You obviously need a network connection to communicate with your HomeKit hub, for instance, but all processing stays on your iPhone and nothing goes beyond your local network. Most Home control functions, Intercom, and Voicemail functions will operate without sending anything to Apple. Speaking of Siri, if you have an iPhone 12 or later it will do even more offline than before. You can set it to list view if you want to see them all covering up your fancy lock screen like before, or a single banner with a counter if you want to keep everything super tidy. The notifications that come in on the iOS 16 lock screen can be customized.Īpple’s fancy new lock screen also includes a new way of receiving notifications in a stack, but that isn’t the only option.
